Spring Series

For 9-12 Grade Teachers

The spring 9-12 seminars will be led by Marty Brandt, whose forthcoming book on sentence-level instruction will be published by Heinemann in the fall. Marty’s sessions will focus on his “Three Pillars of Writing Instruction”: Sentence Focus, Sentence Development, and Coherence.

Come for one, or come for all three; whatever the case, you will leave with a greater understanding of the role the sentence plays in writing development.

Martin Brandt is a Teacher Consultant with SJAWP and teaches at Independence High School, East Side Union HSD.

The First Pillar of Writing Instruction: Sentence Focus

For 9-12 Grade Teachers

Marty Brandt

Have you ever read one of those student sentences that’s so bad you don’t know where to begin, a sentence that makes you consider another line of work because you have no idea how to respond except to write “awk” in the margin? It turns out there is a starting point, and a crucial one at that. Marty will share ideas and strategies to help you understand sentence focus and offer steps you can take to help you get the “awk” out of your response.

The Second Pillar of Writing Instruction: Sentence Development

For 9-12 Grade Teachers

Marty Brandt

In this workshop, instructors and students will learn to utilize skills that apply to both poetry and prose. This will help instructors teach writing across multiple genres, especially personal statements and college application essays, and it will allow students to build bridges from personal writing to academic writing.

The Third Pillar of Writing Instruction: Coherence

For 9-12 Grade Teachers

Marty Brandt

Most teachers are prepared to define coherence—the way sentences work together—only by complaining about its absence. In this workshop, Marty will discuss the true nature of coherence in writing and provide a classroom model that students can use to write both freely and coherently, so that they can begin to use their writing as a tool for the discovery of ideas they didn’t know they had.
