Grades 9-12 – Joyful Noise: Creating Joy in the Classroom

Nancy Kennet

Have you felt that the relentless focus on standards and testing has sucked the life out of your teaching? Never fear! There are ways to recapture the joy without sacrificing one iota of rigor.

Come out this summer and learn techniques for inspiring students every day of the year. Your classroom can become the one they look forward to each day. Each one of these techniques is designed to deepen students understanding of literature and develop the underlying structures of writing in many genres, from the informative and explanatory essay to the college admissions response. Activities include: 1) Debate, both in literature and in current events- Students turn their debate brief into a focused, well-researched argument essay; 2) Sentence composing as the essential building block of all writing; 3) Immersing students in figurative language, imagery, and vocabulary in creative ways that give them the ability to identify, explain and recreate these essential elements of literature.
