Jump Into Narrative Writing By Using Your Imagination!
For K-2 Grades

In this workshop, we will explore story writing strategies such as beginning, middle, and end to teach narrative writing. We will use a mentor text to physically demonstrate how the beginning, middle, and the end of the story looks before we try writing our own creation.

Jennifer Baumgartner, SJAWP Teacher Consultant, teaches 2nd grade teacher at Zanker Elementary School in Milpitas Unified School District. She loves teaching writing using Writer’s Workshop and has done so for 27 years. In her spare time, she loves to travel, cook, read and write.

 

Getting to the Heart of the Story
For 3-5 Grades

We will begin with brainstorming different short story ideas and then move into drafting those pieces. Using think-aloud strategies, we will help students pause to think about how to add details and dialogue, as well as check in to see how we could improve the piece as we go – internalizing the revising and editing processes. Everybody has a story, what’s yours? We can’t for you to share it.

Hey, you! Let’s talk! – Engaging Dialogue and Narrative Writing
For 6-7 Grades

The key to creating believable characters and engaging storytelling is great dialogue.
In this workshop students and teachers will engage with mentor texts, participate in improv sketches, and craft dialogue to move stories forward and draw the reader into the story.

“Laugh and the World Laughs with You”: Engaging Student Writers through the Writing of Humor
For 8-12 Grades

Teachers, learn how to inspire students to enjoy the writing of humorous pieces using a mentor text and mini-lessons on the literary features that enhance humorous writing. Middle and High School students often read and write very serious pieces throughout the academic year, and I have found that students look forward to an opportunity to both read and write in a humorous context as well. Models inspire them to do so.
