Fall Series

For 8-12 Grade Teachers

Toward a Pedagogy of Coherence in Writing

Writing across the curriculum presents challenges for everybody, not just English teachers. Students often struggle to balance course content with the need to write clearly, presenting a difficult situation for both student and teacher. So what can we do to help our students write both independently and coherently? In this series we will explore the meaning of coherence in writing and use a model of coherence to help students anticipate the needs of their readers, so they can free themselves of the agonizing survival tactics that so often characterize their writing.

Martin Brandt is a Teacher Consultant with SJAWP and teaches at Independence High School, East Side Union HSD. He is the author of Between the Commas,

Branching Left, Branching Right: How We Develop Longer Sentences

For 9-12 Grade Teachers
